During an interview for The Golf Channel in the USA in 2006, world number one Tiger Woods said one of the biggest problems he sees in the golfers with whom he is paired in PGA Tour pro-am events is that so few amateur golfers ever take the time to be custom fit for their golf clubs.
“Golf is the only "club and ball sport" in which the clubs used to hit the ball are sold in a standard, virtually ‘one size fits’ all form... In tennis, quality rackets are stocked in different grip sizes and are never sold with strings installed. Why? Because racket makers and retailers all know that different tennis players cannot play their best with the same grip size or with the same string type and string tension… It is the same in baseball, ice hockey and cricket, but not in golf… Accurate custom fitting is for ALL golfers, not just professionals or single digit handicap players,” Tiger Woods, The Golf Channel, 2006
Naturally we are not going to argue with the great man; but we must point out he missed out on two very important facts.
1. There are many levels of club fitting and you won't find the best at a big name brand fitting center or at your local pro shop; they fit in a manner that suits their production lines.
2. Any club fitting session is rendered usless by production line assembly (and you can bet your bottom dollar Tigers clubs don't come off a production line manned by seasonal workers).
